About

We have created Finn + Friends to honour our boy, and all past & future ‘friends’ – This is a fundraising initiative, with funds (and material items) being donated directly to BARCS Rescue – If it wasn’t for BARCS, we wouldn’t have had the best 14 months of our lives.

Finn + Friends will host a multitude of events throughout the year

Above all, I miss your kind, soulful eyes. My boy, those eyes could warm a cold heart from miles away. We had wordless conversations, the two of us. You made me feel warm, safe, welcome and heard. All without saying a word.

I am ensuring your legacy lives on… although I wish this wasn’t the case – I’d rather you be here. I am creating something in your legacy, I am not sure exactly what, but it’s called “Finn + Friends”.

Lp – aka Mama

The definition of ‘Bestest Boy’ – Born March 29th, 2019 in Bakersfield, California, we can only assume his first ~3 years of life were tough. He found himself caught as a stray, and went to a high-kill shelter. Days away from euthanasia, the lovely folks at BARCS Rescue arranged a transport to Calgary. Finn hopped on that transport, along with 63 other dogs – destination, CALGARY! This is when his life truly started.

Once Finny arrived in Calgary, he was vetted & placed in an incredible foster home – his Foster Mom, who we lovingly call ‘FM’, took amazing care of him for 3 weeks… where he bonded with his Foster Sister, Riley. Finny certainly made an impact on FM & her family.

Upon seeing Finn’s face on a social media platform, we immediately sent in an application. Oddly enough, we weren’t selected to adopt Finny… BUT, the selected adopters had a change in their life circumstances & weren’t able to proceed with the adoption…. that is when they got the call; “are you still interested in adopting Finn?” — YES! Duh.Of course.

Finny came home on May 3rd, 2022, and thus, the Peters clan was complete; Mama, Daddo, Tank & Finny.

The next 14 months were filled with love & tons of laughter – Finny was the household comedian and there was never a dull moment – boy, could he make us laugh. Finn got to experience family BBQ’s, his first Christmas, his first Birthday burger, his first ‘Gotcha Day’, and he certainly put some kilometres on those paws … but the best part? He had a big brother who was his best friend. Tanks butt was Finn’s favourite place to snuggle. Its just such a shame he had so many “firsts”, but they were also his “onlys”…

Finn could commonly be found strolling the neighbourhood, laying on the hot tub cover, watching the neighbourhood through the front window, accompanying Mama to work appointments, building his ‘Finny Forts’, sniffing your shins, or ‘helping’ Chef Daddo in the kitchen.

Fast forward 14 months later, after a month of trying to treat an ‘owie’ on his foot, Finn became lethargic & his symptoms were worrisome. On June 28, 2023 we brought Finn to the VCA Care Centre in Calgary, which is an emergency hospital for our beloved fuzzy friends – a place you never wish to be. After 3 nights & 4 days at the hospital, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to say ‘see ya later’ to our friend & family member. Finn passed away due to sudden kidney failure.

Nobody knows exactly what caused his kidneys to fail, so suddenly – but its suspected a drug he was prescribed for his foot at the beginning of June. There could have been a chance that Finn had a degree of kidney failure from his time on the street and something just set it over the edge… we don’t know. The not knowing is the hardest.

We are now advocating to get initial bloodwork done on your rescue pups so that you have some sort of ‘baseline’ if something were to go sideways. With Finn, we didn’t know what his ‘baseline’ looked like — If we had known, perhaps we would have advocated against the certain drug he was prescribed.

The 14 months with our boy were the best – and we ‘assumed’ we would have 8+ more years with him… We had so many plans.
